WWE Smacks Down Roids

World Wrestling Entertainment has suspended 10 of its wrestlers for violations of a policy that tests for steroids and other drugs, the company said Thursday.

Stamford-based WWE says it issued suspension notices based on independent information from the prosecutor’s office in Albany County, N.Y., which has been investigating illegal steroid sales.

Neither the WWE nor the Albany County district attorney’s office would comment on the suspended wrestlers’ identities Thursday. No criminal charges were filed, they said.

Under a WWE wellness policy instituted last year that requires tests for steroids and other drugs, a wrestler faces a 30-day suspension without pay for a first violation, a 60-day suspension for a second violation and firing for a third violation. Performers are tested at least four times per year.

“We are very actively working to eradicate the use of steroids and performance enhancing drugs in the WWE,” WWE spokesman Gary Davis said. “Today’s action is part of that effort.”

WWE officials met this month with New York prosecutors investigating illegal steroid sales. Albany County prosecutor P. David Soares’ office has said that pro wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed his family before hanging himself in June, and other WWE wrestlers had been clients of Signature Pharmacy of Orlando, Fla. Investigators say Benoit had a steroid and other drugs in his system at the time.

When Soares’ office began investigating the illegal sale and distribution of controlled substances, he said, his office sought the help of WWE after a number of its wrestlers appeared on customer lists of clinics connected with Signature Pharmacy.

Nine people, including three current or former physicians, have pleaded guilty, most affiliated with Internet and phone-order companies that filled orders for anabolic steroids and growth hormones through Signature and sent drugs to customers around the country, including Albany County.

Signature’s owners have pleaded not guilty.

The Benoit case prompted the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to ask WWE to turn over any information it has on steroid and drug abuse in pro wrestling. The committee has not yet scheduled a hearing on the case.

WWE said the company’s practice has been to not release the names of suspended wrestlers, but the company has notified performers that starting Nov. 1 the names of those suspended for violating the policy will be made public.

WWE has about 160 wrestlers. WWE shares closed Thursday at $14.80, down 21 cents. - (Christoffersen, J - AP)

Older Women Run Like The Wind

jog.bmp

Do you run? For exercise that is. Have you ever asked yourself why you run? It seems that most people that run or jog for exercise do so without any thought or notion of an ultimate goal. Yes some people are always in training mode, and set to always be improving, but most are not. A recent New York Times article looks at this idea as well as the revelation that for some reason older women run faster than younger women.

A Good Body Isn’t Everything

I’m sure most of you reading this have already seen this train wreck of an answer but it’s bad enough to warrant a little over exposure. And just in case you are reading this and haven’t seen it, well then you’re in for a treat. Below is a video excerpt taken from the recent Miss Teen USA pageant in which Miss South Carolina answered the question “Why one-fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a map?” Now I would just describe the answer to you but I honestly can’t. It hurts my brain to even attempt to follow the tiny line of logic that she is on. So just watch and “learn”.

Wow! South Carolina must be prouder than ever.

Don’t Forget Your Jacket

1_pic1.jpg1_pic3.jpg1_pic2.jpg

I am one of those people who always forgets to bring a jacket. Especially when I am outdoors and active - hiking, biking, etc. When it’s 85 degrees out and you’re going for a hike, not many people remember to throw a jacket into their gear. But once you are higher in altitude and sweaty and taking a break, the temperature starts to become an issue and I always find myself questioning why I didn’t just bring a small jacket. Well I recently stumbled upon the answer to mine (and I’m sure some others) problem. Core Gear is coming out with a jacket that folds into a backback, or vice versa, and also has a built in pillow for those cool down periods. No word yet on when exactly the XiP3 will be available (estimated at late Fall, to coincide with the video release of the Transformers movie) but if you go to their website you can sign up to be notified as soon as they are released. Finally, a backpack that turns into something useful.

Australia Fights Obesity

1505fatties_wideweb__470×2220.jpg

Australia’s leading nutrition organisation, the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), is launching a major campaign to tackle Australia’s obesity and its related diseases, which costs the nation 21 billion dollars, or one thousand dollars per person per year.

The latest statistics show that obesity has been skyrocketing with 7.4 million adults or 54% of the adult population - and around 25% of Australian kids now classified as overweight or obese.

Obesity can also lead to debilitating diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, some cancers, osteoporosis and fractures, high blood pressure, stroke, gastrointestinal problems, dental health and kidney disease.

‘We could stop this terrible tragedy if people get the right help,’ says DAA Executive Director and Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), Ms Claire Hewat.

The DAA’s national campaign telling Australians that they can take control of their health by seeing an APD for individual advice and support to eat healthier and feel better launches today with a Community Service Announcement.

‘Too many people waste time and money by following fads. APDs are university qualified in food, nutrition and health and just like you go to the dentist if you have a sore tooth. it makes sense to see an APD if you want to lose weight or manage other diet-related problems.’ says Claire Hewat.

Sydney resident, Cathy Bacot lost 40 kilograms after years of unsuccessfully following fads and dieting gimmicks.

“It’s the one on one individualised advice that has really helped, rather than a one size fits all, or a one way lecture. I get something out of every session. Joanne, my APD, just seems to know what I need and how to recharge me,” says Ms Bacot who has lost enough weight to consider starting a family.

The CSA was produced by MWC Media and builds on the APD Advertising Print Campaign developed by Sudler and Hennessey. Additional financial support was provided by Kellogg’s. Kellogg’s is a DAA Corporate Partner.

The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the professional body representing dietitians nationally. Dietitians are experts in nutrition and a public guarantee of this expertise is provided through the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program - a national system for recognition of professionals who have the qualifications and expertise to provide expert nutrition and dietary advice. (Australian Social Trends 2007. Article: Overweight and obesity. Australian Bureau of Statistics.)

Could this be a sign of good things to come in the United States? If the same resources were made available would people begin to take advantage of them? Or are we too content, de-sensitized and accepting of obesity?

Best Parts in Sports

From Sports Illustrated comes a list of the best body parts in sports. Some parts are more notable than others, and a few don’t really qualify as “parts” but I guess they are going with a loose interpretation of the word.

Sport Focus: Skimboarding

skim_goodsmall.jpg

Skimboarding is a sport similar to surfing which takes place near the shore. The skimboarder stands about twenty feet from the ocean with skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. When they see a wave they run towards it with their skimboard still in hand. Upon reaching the wet sand they drop the board and jump onto it as quickly as possible. Once on the board, the skimmer must remain as stable as possible and prepare to make the transition to the ocean. The skimmer then (hopefully) glides out into the ocean toward the oncoming wave, banks off of it, and rides it back into shore.

The history of skimboarding dates back to the late 1920’s when Laguna Beach lifeguards used to skimboard on pieces of wood. Although people still skimboard on wood skimboards throughout the world, the sport has evolved immensely. Today skimboarding is one of the most high-tech water sports anywhere, while continuing to be one of the smallest. The boards used by professional skimboarders are built using technology adapted from aerospace to attain maximum lightness, buoyancy, and rocker. The board used by the average skimboarder is far more technologically advanced than that of the average surfer. Even though skimboarding is a fairly old sport, it continues to be a small sport. While skimboarding has become more and more globalized in recent years, Laguna Beach California has long been the “north shore” of skimboarding.

Tex Haines started the first skimboarding business which he named Victoria after his home beach in Laguna. With rising popularity, many others have sprung up and skimboards are now easy to come by.

Like surfing, while skimboarding is predominantly a recreational activity, it has also evolved into a highly competitive water sport.

Hello Becks!

t1_0815_becks.jpg

How is the 250 million dollar man panning out so far? I’d day pretty freakin’ good. Despite having to sit out the first couple of matches due to an ankle injury acquired while playing for Real Madrid, David Beckham is finally making his presence known across the MLS. In only a three games played, and only two starts, he has already scored a goal, logged two assists and been a leader on and off the field. The captain’s arm band was handed over to Beckham from Landon Donovan and while some speculated that it was a premature move, Beckham has been earning every bit of honor that comes with the armband. He started yesterday’s game against Chivas USA despite jet lag and fatigue from arriving back in LA from London only 6 hours before the match. He is already showing his dedication to his new found team and home in Los Angeles as well as his passion for the sport and fans.

Unfortunately the season is almost over and the Galaxy are not in very good standings, not too much Beckham can do to change the season before he arrived. But his performance and dedication is already giving fans high hopes for next season.

Even without his on field performance, his move to the MLS can already be declared a victory from a business point of view. Beckham was brought over to bring much needed attention to the MLS. He has already increased jersey sales by over 300%, increased tickets price by almost 50% and increased game attendance enormously. In his first game against the New York Red Bulls, whose average game attendance is 11,500 he boosted that number to 66,000! All of this in only a few games. So is everyone still caught up in the buzz of Beckham or could these numbers be here to stay? Could Beckham be the saviour of soccer in the US?

Worse Than Steroids?

baseball.JPG

Recently Barry Bonds has been the black cloud hanging over baseball. Well, Bonds and rampant steroid accusations throughout both leagues. We have all been so focused on the did he or didn’t he use steroids issue that we have lost sight of all the other terrible events in baseball’s history that are far worse. Cracked.com recently came out with the “9 Baseball Moments More Wretched Than Steroids” and we think they are all deserving of that title (animal lovers beware of #7!).

What’s happening to America’s pastime?

If you are still more interested in the steroid issue, watch the evolution of Bonds and McGwire’s bulking up through baseball cards.
