Anti-Inflammatory Diet

What are the best foods for an anti-inflammatory diet?
There are many foods that can play an important role in an “anti-inflammatory diet.” Here is an overview:
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are consider anti-inflammatory. That is because this class of nutrients serves as precursors for compounds in the body (such as certain prostaglandins and leukotrienes) that have anti-inflammatory activity. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include: fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna and other cold water fish; nuts and seeds, notably flaxseeds, hemp seeds and walnuts; and other foods, including soybeans, winter squash and purslane.
Extra virgin olive oil is another food that contains healthy fats (monounsaturated fats), and one that has been found to have anti-inflammatory benefits. Some of these benefits seem to come through its unique antioxidant phytonutrients, such as oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol. It’s important to note that these phytonutrients are more concentrated in extra virgin olive than other types of olive oil.
Flavonoid and carotenoid phytonutrients also have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and therefore deep colored fruits and vegetables would be a great inclusion in an diet geared towards controlling inflammation. Great choices here would be berries, cherries, beets, leafy greens and other richly colored foods. Pineapple also contain a proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzyme called bromelain that has anti-inflammatory activity.
In terms of foods to avoid, those that may promote inflammation, here are our suggestions: vegetable oils such as sunflower oil and corn oil as they are rich in omega-6 fatty acids; “white foods” such as white flour, white rice and white sugar; processed foods that contain synthetic flavorings, colorings and preservatives. (It is not that your diet should not have any omega-6 fatty acids as they are essential fatty acids that play a role in health. It is just that most people already get an ample supply of these fatty acids in their diets and therefore should try to minimize concentrated food sources of them in order to maintain a balanced omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio).
While the above suggestions can play a role in a diet that helps to control inflammatory processes, you may also want to consult a licensed healthcare practitioner skilled in nutrition to get ideas that may be specific to your individual needs. (whfoods.org)
Bonds’ Ball Gets An Asterick

Barry Bonds’ 756th home run ball will be branded with an asterisk and sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame, fashion designer Mark Ecko revealed Wednesday on NBC’s “Today Show.”
Ecko purchased the ball for just over $752,000 after winning an auction held by Sotheby’s before allowing the public to have a say in what its fate should be.
Over 10 million people voted and were given the options of banishing it into space, bestowing it to the Hall of Fame or branding it with an asterisk, due to the popular thought that Bonds used performance-enhancing drugs to accomplish the feat.
The decision was a landslide as 47 percent of voters put their support behind branding it while 34 percent voted to bestow it to the Hall of Fame.
“We’re going to be working with the folks at the Hall of Fame. It is a historical museum. We want to treat this ball as such, as an artifact with respect,” Ecko said on the Today Show.
“You bet we’re happy to get it,” Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey said. “This ball wouldn’t be coming to Cooperstown without Mark Ecko buying it from the fan who caught it and then putting it up to the vote of the fans.”
Bonds hit the historic 756th home run on August 7 off Washington Nationals starter Mike Bacsik, ending the 33-year reign of Hank Aaron as baseball’s all-time home run leader.
The announcement came on the same day that Bonds will take his position in left field for the final time at home as a member of the San Francisco Giants.

Never heard of Parkour? Then keep reading, you’ll be glad you did!
Anyone who has seen Casino Royale (the latest of the James Bond series) remembers the spectacular chase scene in the beginning that has Bond chasing a man who moves with the grace, power, and ease of a jaguar. The man easily leaps off of and over obstacles, rolls away from multiple story jumps unharmed, and runs on all fours, making his escape look effortless and impressive, although calling it impressive still doesn’t do it justice. Anyone in the know knows that this style of movement is referred to as parkour, and is a fully-functioning community of skilled individuals capable of moving as if unrestricted by their own bodies. Unfortunately, the group in the know is still small. Parkour is something that either you are involved in, or you have never heard of. If you are like most people, myself included, you see the amazing display of athleticism in Casino Royale and think, “wow, that guy can do some cool stuff” or, “they must have enhanced that footage someone”, never knowing that you are watching a master at work. So what exactly is parkour, and where did it come from?
The term parkour was defined by David Belle, the founder of parkour, and his friend Hubert Koundé. It derives from parcours du combattant, the classic obstacle course method of military training proposed by Georges Hébert. Koundé took the word parcours, replaced the “c” with a “k” to suggest aggressiveness, and removed the silent “s” as it opposed parkour’s philosophy about efficiency. Parkour’s focus is on moving as efficiently and quickly as possible from one point to another, using the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment, from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls, and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Male parkour practitioners are recognized as traceurs and female as traceuses. An important characteristic of parkour is efficiency. A traceur moves not merely as fast as he can, but also in the least energy-consuming and most direct way possible. Going further in that path, efficiency also involves avoiding injuries, short and long-term, part of why parkour’s unofficial motto is être et durer (to be and to last). Read more

Signature Pharmacy Back To Old Tricks

Signature Pharmacy, at the center of a steroids scandal after federal agents raided the company earlier this year, is back in business and offering veterinary steroids unapproved for human use in the United States, according to documents obtained by Yahoo! Sports.
Injectable stanozolol, an anabolic steroid used to speed the recovery of horses and other animals debilitated by surgery or disease, is listed on the price sheet of Signature Pharmacy’s current products. Some athletes have reportedly used injectable stanozolol as a performance-enhancing drug.
The district attorney in Albany County, N.Y., launched the investigation two years ago and is continuing to investigate Signature Pharmacy, a spokeswoman for the office has said. Christopher Baynes, the lead prosecutor on the case, on Tuesday declined comment for this story.

29 Healthiest Foods

BellyBytes recently released a list of the 29 healthiest foods and we thought we’d pass the info on down the line. This is a great list with wonderful explanations about each food’s benefit. Definitely worth a read, some of them may surprise you!
FRUITS
01. Apricots
The Power: Beta-carotene, which helps prevent free-radical damage and protect the eyes. The body also turns beta-carotene into vitamin A, which may help ward off some cancers, especially of the skin. One apricot has 17 calories, 0 fat, 1 gram of fiber. Snacks on them dried, or if you prefer fresh, buy when still firm; once they soften, they lose nutrients.
02. Avocados
The Power: Oleic acid, an unsaturated fat that helps lower overall cholesterol and raise levels of HDL, plus a good dose of fiber. One slice has 81 calories, 8 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber. Try a few slices instead of mayonnaise to dress up your next burger.
03. Raspberries
The Power: Ellagic acid, which helps stall cancer-cell growth. These berries are also packed with vitamin C and are high in fiber, which helps prevent high cholesterol and heart disease. A cup has only 60 calories, 1 gram of fat and 8 grams of fiber. Top plain low-fat yogurt or oatmeal (another high fiber food) with fresh berries.
04. Mango
The Power: A medium mango packs 57mg of vitamin C, almost your whole-recommended daily dose. This antioxidant helps prevent arthritis and boosts wound healing and your immune system. Mangoes also boast more than 8,000 IU of vitamin A (as beta-carotene). One mango has 135 calories, 1 gram of fat and 4 grams of fiber. Cut on up and serve it over leafy greens. Bonus: Your salad will taste like dessert!

Juice vs. Fresh

Does fruit juice have fewer antioxidants than in the fresh fruit itself?
Yes, fruit juice has fewer antioxidants than fresh fruit. While juice can be a delicious and refreshing beverage, unfortunately it doesn’t provide you with the whole range of nutrients, including antioxidants, which you can get from the whole fruit.
That’s because juicers usually separate the juice from the pulp, and within the pulp resides a concentration of nutrients, including many of the carotenoid and flavonoid phytonutrients, which have powerful antioxidant activity. You’ll often find juices that indicate “Most Pulp” or “Lots of Pulp,” but even in this case, the processing of the juice is a step that destroys some of the antioxidant components. Additionally, the peel in some fruits-such as apples, for example-is rich in phytonutrients such as antioxidant flavonoids. Yet, in commercially prepared juices, the peel may be removed before the juicing process, so you won’t get the benefits you would from eating the whole fruit.
It’s important to remember that the skins of fruits are also the most susceptible to pesticide sprays, and that your best option is to purchase certified organic fruit that cannot be sprayed with synthetic pesticides. (World’s Healthiest Foods)

Investigators questioned O.J. Simpson and named him a suspect Friday in a confrontation at a casino hotel room involving sports memorabilia. The former football star said he went to the room to retrieve property that was stolen from him but denied breaking in.
Las Vegas Metro Police Capt. James Dillon said the confrontation was reported as an armed robbery.
“We have reported from the victim that there were weapons involved,” Dillon said, but he added that no weapons had been recovered and stressed that the investigation was in its “infancy.”
No charges had been filed and no one was in custody, he said.
Simpson was cooperating, Dillon said.
Simpson told the AP he was conducting a sting operation to collect his belongings at the Palace Station casino. He said no weapons were involved. (LAS VEGAS - AP)
